Supplements After 40: What Actually Helps Your Strength Training in Naples, FL

Supplements After 40: What Actually Helps Your Strength Training in Naples, FL

Jake, Joe, and Marcon break this whole thing down in this week’s episode.

Give it a listen if you want the unfiltered version, including the supplements they think are a flat-out waste.

This one is for the adults in Naples who’ve already put in the work. You’re getting to the gym a few days a week, you’re lifting, and now you’re standing in a supplement aisle wondering which of these actually does anything. Most of them don’t.

A few are worth keeping around, and that difference matters more after 40 than it ever did at 25. At Project Evolve Naples FL, our personal training Naples FL members ask about this almost every week. So here’s the straight answer a personal trainer Naples FL would give you about supplements and where strength training fits in. What’s worth your money, and what to skip.

Project Evolve has been in Naples since 2016. We’re the only gym in the area built entirely around strength training for adults 40 and over, run in a small group personal training format. The people we work with aren’t chasing a look. They want to keep playing pickleball, carry their own bags through the airport, and keep up with their grandkids without thinking twice.

Supplements Are the 5%, Not the Foundation

Master the Basics First

There are six basic steps to getting strong, and we walk our members through all of them. Then there’s a seventh step we like to talk about. It’s the other stuff. Call it the 5%, maybe even the 2%, that won’t move the needle on its own.

Once you’ve got the basics handled, that small stuff won’t hurt you. It’ll help a little around the edges. But it only counts after the real work is in place, and the real work is food, sleep, and showing up to lift.

A Supplement Fills a Gap, Nothing More

You don’t need a cabinet full of pills to get strong. Food and sleep do the heavy lifting. A supplement is just there to fill in something your diet keeps missing.

So the question isn’t “what should everyone take.” It’s “what am I not getting.” If you’re vegan, you’re probably short on protein, so protein powder makes sense. If you eat mostly meat and skip the vegetables, a multivitamin or a greens product fills that hole. Figure out your gap first. Then patch it.

The Few Worth Keeping Around

Creatine and protein are the two our coaches point to first. Creatine is the one most worth taking consistently if your goal is strength, and protein is an easy fix for the very common problem of not eating enough of it in a day, especially if you tend to skip breakfast.

Fish oil earns a spot if you don’t eat much fatty fish like salmon, since that’s where a lot of people fall short. Magnesium is another one people add when their diet runs thin on it. And a multivitamin is a reasonable backstop if you know your meals are repetitive.

Notice the pattern. Every one of these is filling a known gap, not performing a miracle.

What’s Usually a Waste of Money

Electrolyte packets are near the top of the waste list for most people. For a normal workout, they’re mostly salt and sugar, and you already get that from eating real food and salting it like a normal person.

BCAAs are the other one to skip. They only grab a few amino acids, and if you’re already getting enough protein from food or a protein powder, you’re covered without them. Same idea with most of the fancy protein snacks and sodas. A few are fine as a treat, but they’re not doing anything a regular meal isn’t.

Our Take

Here’s what I tell people who walk in with a bag full of bottles. You don’t need a cabinet full of pills to get strong. Food and sleep do the real work. Everything else is filling a gap, and if you don’t know what gap you’re filling, you’re just spending money to feel productive.

After training adults in Naples for almost ten years, I’ve watched plenty of people chase the perfect stack while skipping sleep and eating like they’re still 30. Get the basics right first. Then, if there’s a real hole in your diet, a supplement can patch it. That’s the whole job.

If you’re in Naples and you’ve been trying to sort the real advice from the marketing, that’s a lot of what we do here. We help adults over 40 build a plan that fits their body and their life, supplements included only where they actually make sense. Learn more at www.projectevolvenaples.com

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I really need supplements to get stronger?

No. The work comes from training consistently, eating enough, and sleeping. Supplements only fill gaps your diet leaves open, so they’re an add-on, never the plan itself.

Which supplements do your coaches actually use?

The short list is creatine and protein. After that, fish oil, magnesium, or a multivitamin depending on what your diet is missing. None of them replace food.

Are electrolyte packets worth it?

For most people doing a normal workout, not really. They’re mostly salt and sugar, and you can get what you need from eating regular food and seasoning it.

What about BCAAs?

Skip them. They only cover a few amino acids, and if you’re getting enough protein from food or a protein powder, you already have what they offer.

Why protein for the average person?

Most people simply don’t eat enough protein in a day, especially if they skip a meal. A scoop of protein powder is a simple way to close that gap without overthinking it.

Do supplements work right away?

No. Something like creatine is about consistency over time, not a one-day boost. If you take it, take it daily and give it weeks, not hours.

What Our Naples Members Say

One of our members recently flew out to California to visit family for his daughter’s birthday. The thing he mentioned when he got back wasn’t the trip itself. It was that he played pickleball with the family the whole time and actually felt good doing it, instead of sitting out or paying for it the next day. That’s the kind of win we’re after. Not a number on a scale, but being able to fully show up for the people you traveled to see.
